What do Norah Jones, N’Dea Davenport, Saul Williams, and U-Roy have in common?
Wax Poetic is the answer to the above question and the answer to many peoples’ wishes for melodic, sensual, world-beat electronica. Founded as a collective based around New York’s underground haven Club Nublu, Wax Poetic is the brainchild of Turkish born saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin. Though Ersahin was jazz trained (Berklee College of Music), he has spent the past 7 years devoted to creating new forms of music based on live performance of electronic styles. The result is Wax Poetic, an ingenious blend of bossa nova, trip hop, and Middle Eastern styles.
And like bees to honey, the vocalists have flocked to Ersahin’s Lower East Side hive to perform and record with Wax Poetic. The most famous Wax Poetic frontwoman was Norah Jones, who worked with the band for years and appears on both of their albums. Brand New Heavies songstress N’Dea Davenport, world-famous Jamaican toaster U-Roy, and poetic giant Saul Williams are just a few of the others who have painted their voices on Wax Poetic’s lush backdrop. Wax Poetic will be making their first appearance in San Francisco, supporting the release of their latest album, the Nublu Sessions.
Making their first public appearance ever, is local funktronica supergroup Firefly. Firefly consists of gospel diva (and Tree O Frogs frontwoman) Krystle Jones, guitarist Dave Janusko (My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult), drummer Dawn Richardson (Four Non Blondes), and bassist Kevin White (Billy Preston, Noelle Hampton). Working directly into the theme of the evening, Firefly plays live electronica, with pulsating rhythms backing Jones soaring vocals.
