Sunset Promotions is honored to present a killer co-bill featuring two of the most exciting acts in International hip hop, Senegalese superstar Daara J. and Lateef the Truthspeaker (of Blackalicious/Fatboy Slim fame) and DJ Mike Relm.
Fresh off a massive national tour opening for Femi Kuti, Senegal’s premier touring act, Daara J, we play one of only 2 solo shows in the United States on August 6 at 12 Galaxies. With the recent American debut of their album, Boomerang (Wrasse), Daara J keeps it positive, while fluidly organic – gratifying both critics and fans alike. Hailed as “funkin’ fearsome polemicists”, the group’s signature Afro-Hip-Hop is reminiscent of Damian Marley, Orishas or Wylcef Jean and is delivered in English, Spanish, French & Wolof (Senegal’s native tongue).
Daara J (meaning ‘school of life’) keeps in the vein of De La Soul or Public Enemy, straying from the typically machismo and materialistic subject matters that permeates mainstream rap. Evoking ancient rhythms, rebellion and the ability to express pain, suffering and triumph through art is what defines hip hop for Daara J. Emerging as Senegal’s elite hip hop crew, Daara J uses their words as a positive force by focusing on subjects like Globalism, the perils of traditional society, the environment and spirituality. Winners of the BBC Radio3 World Music Award for “Best African Act”, the group has spent months atop the European world music charts, proving to be as universally relevant and appreciated as it is unique to its creators. Melting the borders between the international hip-hop community, Daara J is considered “one of the premier vocal outfits of our time”.
Oakland native, Lateef the Truth Speaker, made his first contribution to the West Coast Hip Hop movement back in 1996. Known for his restless, experimental brand of hip-hop, Lateef later became known as one half of underground rap duo, Latryx (formed with Lyrics Born). Though he is best known for his Quannum Projects work with Latyrx and several tours and albums with Blackalicious, he achieved major interbational notoriety for his recent work with uber-producer Fatboy Slim. His work on the huge international hit “Wonderful Night” has made Lateef’s a star.
DJ Mile Relm will open the show and play with Lateef. He is one of the nation’s top turntable performers, having actually invented several turntable techniques. He joins us fresh off national tours with Blackalicious.
