About Sunset Promotions

|
HISTORY:
Beginning with the San Francisco Mardi Gras in 1997, Sunset Promotions has been conceiving, producing, and promoting musical events focused on (but not limited to) funk, soul, jazz, latin, world beat, New Orleans boogie, and hip hop. Sunset books and produces Sea of Dreams NYE, the North Beach Jazz Fest, All Shook Down Music Festival, San Francisco Funk Festival, the Frenchmen Block Party, and the San Francisco and Los Angeles Mardi Gras Balls. Though we have worked with dozens of venues in the Bay Area, our work normally finds us the Independent, Mighty, 1015, Mezzanine, the Great American Music Hall, the DNA Lounge, and Cafe Du Nord.
SUNSET PEOPLE:
John Miles: The founder of Sunset Promotions, John has produced concerts and festivals for 10 years, working with Sunset, the SF Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival. John takes the lead in all aspects of Sunset's operations. Though everyone at Sunset does everything, John's main focus is event production. John's favorite drink is a dirty vodka martini, and when he's not in the office, he is usually on his surfboard or walking his dog. He can be reached at john@sunsetpromotions.net
Robert Kowal: Robbie joined Sunset in 1999, and has shared majority partnership with John Miles ever since. Though everyone at Sunset does everything, Robbie's main focus is marketing, and to this end he does the majority of Sunset's graphic design and oversees public relations work. He has years of experience as a journalist, public relations professional, health inspector (yup!), and mental hospital maintenance man (no kidding). In his spare time, he can be found DJing around the country in his alter ego, Motion Potion. His favorite drink is a Wild Turkey neat and he has a siamese cat. He can be reached at rob@sunsetpromotions.net
Michael Robelo: Michael is Sunset's production guru, managing the bitterest details of the most complex concerts. Want to produce a 60-piece hip hop orchestra 1500 miles from home, Rabello can swing it. Want to get 25 burlesque musicians, dancers and comedians onstage and rocking in unison, Rabello can swing it. Michael is simply a miracle-worker as dozens of artists and other production companies can attest. When he's not working on music, Michael digs rare wines and has sailed around the world more than once. If he had a pet, it would probably be a fish. He can be reached at michael@sunsetpromotions.net
BAY AREA SERVICES
The Need: San Francisco is among the most challenging and competitive music markets in the United States. Local bands are often drowned out by national acts, while smaller national acts find themselves in the wrong venue with little support. Artists need a local partner who can shepherd them from 200-cap. venues to the 1000-cap. venues. They need "hometown treatment" whether the Bay Area is their home or not. They need to know that Bay Area press will be informed and that a dedicated crew of street promoters is going to get the posters up and the flyers out. They also need to be sure that they are playing the right venue, for the right audience, and that the show is priced to meet the preferences of that audience. Most importantly, they need someone on the ground in this market that can coordinate all of these issues, from press, to promotion, to production, to hospitality and accommodation. Someone on the scene, who is going to make sure that the “scene” shows up.
Getting the Word Out:
Our goal is to provide both a professional media outreach effort with an energetic grass roots street promotion scheme and community-driven online social networking. Sunset Promotions has strong relationships with the Bay Area's key publications and we score coverage for our shows more often than not. Our street team can produce flyers and posters and have them in over 100 Bay Area location in a week. We also have a Bay Area email list of over 24,000 people, most of whom have been to our shows before, and are looking forward to the next Sunset shindig.
Music that Moves:
Though we are open-minded lovers of all forms of music, Sunset focuses the majority of its promotional energy on "music that moves" ie: stuff you can dance to. We do not discriminate between bands and DJs nor between genres, but the music must be danceable and must be MUSIC. In the past 5 years we have worked with live artists such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Phoenix, Thievery Corporation, Ozomatli, Yard Dogs Road Show.... and DJ/Electronic acts as diverse as Roni Size, Mad Professor, Major Lazer, Cut Chemist, Bassnectar, Boysnoize, Pendulum, LTJ Bukem, Tipper, Fort Knox 5 etc...
We are open-minded, honest, and genuinely committed to the appreciation of music and to an empathetic relationship with our artists and audience. Our commitment to music often goes above and beyond what one might expect from a purely business-driven people. We want to help tip the balance back towards "quality music" and away from "marketable music." and will often stake our well being on this commitment.
